The Clock and The Grind
02:35
|

The clock and the grind
So I can define
The parts of my life
I can’t freeze in time
I was favoring a soft landing
Things were getting slowly out of hand
Where the hills green mountains majesty
meets the silence of a slumberland
The clock and the grind
Cruel lessons learned
I’m underdesigned
And so overheard
And you held your ground so gracefully
Always plastering over the cracks
Before the darkness came this way again
You’d head it off before the pass
It’s a habit forced in from the street
It’s a consequence we all must meet
At the ball you raised your eyes at me
It was all I could do to keep from laughing
The clock and the grind
So I can define
The parts of my life
I can’t freeze in time
I was favoring a soft landing
Things were getting slowly out of hand
Where the hills green mountains majesty
meets the silence of a slumberland

The Nanny State
03:47
|
|||
83 began in January
And ran until the spring of 85
Everyone who was anyone was happy
So glad to be alive
And when the news came out about a week or so ago
I couldn’t get myself to bed
I can’t forget what it read
No one should wait until they’re dead
Some wait forever instead
How the blood doesn’t collect is anyone’s guess
After a modern Jonestown wreck is laid to rest
And you couldn’t even bother to call
85 turned into 97
I couldn’t even catch my breath
the heart it worked the skin was young the mind so cool
and yet with nothing left to do
And when the news came out about a week or so ago
I couldn’t get myself to bed
I can’t forget what it read
No one should wait until they’re dead
Some wait forever instead
How the blood doesn’t collect is anyone’s guess
After a modern Jonestown wreck is laid to rest
And you couldn’t even bother to call
The nanny state I’m living in gets weaker
As the years wear thin
No one here can even tie their shoes
Soft or hard Paternalism
We believed in strict bonism
The world is good but far from one we’d choose
They gathered up the sentimental greetings
The miles of film the scattered clothes and shoes
A man he starts his way in life believing
Believing when there’s nothing left to lose
And when the news came out about a week or so ago
I couldn’t get myself to bed
I can’t believe what it read
No one should wait until they’re dead
Some wait forever instead
How the blood doesn’t collect is anyone’s guess
After a modern Jonestown wreck is laid to rest
And you couldn’t even bother to call

Laura
02:57
|
|||
She grew up
In a terrace
Water tower
New York Town
It’s the melting pot she lived for
And the colors in the film score
One for the team
Would you sing with me sing with me sing?
We wrote you a letter
Congratulations on the birth
Number two or number three?
I guess it’s easy to lose count
Of all the things you kind of think you’re glad about
In junior high
She sang with street bands
In the subway
Sneaking out
She could hear them from a block away
It was so beautiful the way they played
One for the team
Would you sing with me sing with me sing?
We wrote you a letter
Congratulations on the birth
Number two or number three?
I guess it’s easy to lose count
Of all the things you kind of think you’re glad about

Anhedonia
04:14
|
|||
I found a ghost key
hidden at the bottom
of a box of forgotten things
Between the pages
unbound stories
of a life I’ve been meaning to read
Would it kill you now?
C’mon and pack a case
And welcome back to Anhedonia
I spoke in fever
To all of the mercy children
In the sun
I was their leader
Without much hope
we’d get over all we’d done
Would it kill you now?
C’mon and pack a case
And welcome back to Anhedonia
If I call you
I was only singing
If I call you
I was only singing
I’m back where I belong
I left the ghost key
hidden at the bottom
of a box of forgotten things
Between the pages
unbound stories
of a life I’ve been meaning to lead
Would it kill you now?
C’mon and pack a case
And welcome back to Anhedonia

The Criminal Rich
01:53
|
|||
Put out the china for the criminal rich
Who poke their fingers into everyone’s dish
Back in the crime lab there’s no evidence
Implicating the criminal rich
Please make way for the criminal rich
Who trample blindly over everyone’s wish
insatiable drive to crash into risk
Who to thank but the criminal rich
Escape, escape from your miserable life
Escape, escape but as hard as you try
I dreamed we lived in the dark ages of old
Stuck in a hut somewhere we couldn’t unload
Hundreds of years gone by the same can be told
Spinning wheels in the same exact pattern
Escape, escape from your miserable life
Escape, escape but as hard as you try
Keep on complaining about the criminal rich
Who seek to gain no matter how much you bitch
Forever scratching an impossible itch
It’s all the same to the criminal rich

Everybody knows it’s a family home
And explicitly they leave well enough alone
So the sharks don’t take a bite
Everybody knows it’s the brain that went to war
And it shows you moving pictures of the tour
From the silence of your room
In the silence of your room
When it was spring
They could talk you into doing anything
Where were those traps you set?
What were those last regrets?
Everybody knows about control
A straight arm stance, a ten foot pole
And the door stays shut all day
Making worse the bad that’s been and done
When the sun went down on everyone
Could you still believe there’s a God?
How could you still believe in God?
When it was spring
They could talk you into doing anything
Where were those traps you set?
What were those last regrets?

Luck
04:11
|
|||
Luck is my favorite myth
Apart from insurance
Luck is a party line
With a guilt-free conscience
And it never forgets the mileage
And it’s sure to collect
When you least expect it
Luck is a flash of light
Full of inertia
Luck is the dream take flight
With an ill idea
And it never escapes the mountain
and it’s cheating on you
Up in the dollhouse
Wake up recovery
There’s a patient on the loose
Mark the trees and points between
Poison all the brew
Because if I find him wandering out there
Grasping his heart in pain
Then down we go together
Like magnetic drops of rain
Like a million icy coffins
Leaning softly to the sun
We felt the heat and begged repeat
To connect everyone
Luck is my favorite myth
Apart from insurance
Luck is a perfect dive
With a perfect collision
And if it fails to remind you
You can bet your life
That it hasn’t forgotten
Wake up recovery
There’s a patient on the loose
Mark the trees and points between
Poison all the brew
Because if I find him wandering out there
Grasping his heart in pain
Then down we go together
Like magnetic drops of rain
Like a million icy coffins
Leaning softly to the sun
We felt the heat and begged repeat
To connect everyone
Luck is my favorite myth
Apart from insurance

Writing blues in the minor key
Get a sense in rapid speed
How years unfold so jaggedly
We act as though we’re living free
It’s west to roam or is it east
We’ll never get from beneath the beast
Clutching us to his leather coat
Where others fought for shreds of hope
And I fought when I was young and wild and able
But now the best crumbs fall far short of my table
Some people walk into disease
Despite the doings of good deeds
Their only fear is getting caught
Breathless when they think they’re not
I’m through with holes in memory
Spanning love and tragedy
Or speaking low in shadow rooms
Connect the author he’ll be calling soon
And I fought when I was young and wild and able
But now the best crumbs fall far short of my table
I had no kids, I had no kin
Stuffed box wood-like mannequin
Getting lost in idle time
Feeling found in simple rhymes
Feed the fool’s gold to me please
Help me get off of my knees
There you were in front of me
Reciting words of alchemy
And I fought when I was young and wild and able
But now the best crumbs fall far short of my table

I’m memorizing
The grass of summer grown
The filth is rising
You’re in disguise
So you can pass by unknown
I’m no stranger to the sound
And volume of your rock and roll
I’m memorizing
The grass of summer grown
Baby get out of here
Move on
Move on
Baby get out of here
Move on move on
Move on
I’m memorizing
The grass of summer grown
It’s the heat trails
Leaving marks on your skin
Leaving on Sunday wind
I’m memorizing
The grass of summer grown
The dog’s gone missing
Wolves in disguise
So you can’t find where they buried him alone
I’m no stranger to the sound
And volume of your rock and roll
I’m memorizing
The grass of summer grown

On Paris Time

My favorite armor
Saves me from the motorcade
My favorite armor
Shields me from the mouse parade
I won’t go down with my compatriots
I won’t go down with my compatriots
My favorite armor
Lifts me from the common fray
My favorite armor
Couldn’t help them anyway
I won’t go down with my compatriots
I won’t go down with my compatriots
There’s always talk of how I’m making out
On Paris time but in the bible belt
A story loosely based on nothing else
Than ways the neighbors entertain themselves
My favorite armor
Goes right for the jugular
My favorite armor
Won’t disclose the secret cure
I won’t go down with my compatriots
I won’t go down with my compatriots
There’s always talk of how I made it through
On Paris time but not a word from you
A story loosely based on what to do
When complications bare their bitter fruit
My favorite armor
Steps up to the microphone
My favorite armor
Sometimes likes to be alone
I won’t go down with my compatriots
I won’t go down with my compatriots
There’s always talk of how I’m making out
On Paris time but in the bible belt
A story loosely based on nothing else
Than ways the neighbors entertain themselves
A story loosely based on nothing else

Tail Lights
01:47
|
|||
There’s an old forgotten suitcase
And it’s lying in the attic
Of your parent’s house they built when they were young
You didn’t think you’d ever act this way
You’re just so God damn erratic
With the drinking and the arguments job to job
Without a clear sight of what’s been done
Do the taillights make your face red
Or are you really still so nervous
Every time you find a relic
Looking back on all the verses never sung
You’re the one nobody understands
Every time it gets to raining
And your coat collects the groundswell from everyone
Though you wish they’d keep it to themselves
They’re entitled to their opinions
You exist for those slim chances
You’ll overcome all the damage that’s been done
Do the taillights make your face red
Or are you really still so nervous
Every time you find a relic
Looking back on all the verses never sung
There’s an old forgotten suitcase
And it’s time you sent it packing
From your parent’s house they built when they were young

Nowhere Near Here
04:00
|
|||
You caught the bug at 17
And you never looked back
Under the curse of anonymity
Here’s to hoping it’ll pass
You’re well beyond the age of persuasion
You promised you wouldn’t be long
You’re nowhere near here
Nowhere near here
I nailed the brakes into the floor
That’s a metaphor my dear
I never had your kind of will
Or satisfaction through the years
You’re well beyond the age of contention
You promised you wouldn’t take long
You’re nowhere near here
Nowhere near here
I save my prayers for desperation
I split my lip in concentration
I know my Latin like the setting sun
The crust of hope that used to be
The rotting stench of liberty
I can’t say I prefer either one
Lay down your legend gracefully
Lay down your broken crown
You can’t rely on pedigree
You have to face up to the now
You’re well beyond the age of persuasion
You promised you wouldn’t be long
You’re nowhere near here
Nowhere near here

Halcyon Days
02:29
|

You might say
That our halcyon days are back
It hasn’t stormed in days
Down the street hear an easy laugh
But soon we’ll watch the summer collapse
You might say
That our halcyon days are here
The picture postcard hours
We spent have reappeared
But soon we’ll watch the summer collapse
You might say
That our halcyon days are back
You might say
That our halcyon days are back

Jason Moody Chicago, Illinois
"Local musician Jason Moody has been riding the periphery of the Chicago indie scene for years, and I think he deserves a
lot more attention than he gets. He's a songwriter who crafts well-structured pop songs, which makes them ripe for covering (check out Daniel Knox's cover of "Halcyon Days"). Moody has a way with melody and hooks. He's also got a lovely voice."
