about

“What Comes Next” (2020) is the furthest afield for me. It’s something to dance to, which probably doesn’t sound like a big deal to you but listen to my other songs. It’s way off the map, it threw away the map, there was a picture of Talking Heads on the map. I found the map in the trash, chewed it up and spit this out.

“You don’t need to know if you’re right.” “You don’t need to know what comes next,” “You don’t need to know what to expect.” “You don’t need to know what lies ahead.” I find all these songs's lyrics comforting. I think it's a reminder to not concern yourself with the past or the future, or the present even.

I recently rediscovered this song’s origins. It started off as a slow, piano-driven piece of dream pop. It had potential, but it never really got off the ground.

lyrics

You don't need to know what to expect
There's secret when you're older
There's a gift under the tree

You don't need to know what comes next
There's a devil on your shoulder
And there's an angel up your sleeve

Pacing the carpet
Kicking up dust
A woman stares on the city bus
Sun in her eyes, she's right in your line of sight
Taking the space you could sell to the world

Space you could sell to the world

You don't need to know what lies ahead
You're a canary in a coal mine
And you're running out of breath

You don't need to know if you're right
You can leave it till tomorrow
This way you won't recall a thing

Pacing the carpet
Kicking up dust
A woman stares on the city bus
Stars in her eyes, reciting a lullaby
Taking the space you could sell to the world

Space you could sell to the world

You don't need to know what to expect
There's secret when you're older
There's a gift under the tree

You don't need to know

What comes next

about

Jason Moody Chicago, Illinois

"Local musician Jason Moody has been riding the periphery of the Chicago indie scene for years, and I think he deserves a lot more attention than he gets. He's a songwriter who crafts well-structured pop songs, which makes them ripe for covering (check out Daniel Knox's cover of "Halcyon Days"). Moody has a way with melody and hooks. He's also got a lovely voice."
