about

I wrote a song called “Total War” in 2020 which I shelved after Garret and I thought the first half of it sounded too blah. Actually, it sounded too Strokes to be honest. There was something about the second half though. The bass line was something we agreed would be a shame to lose. Rewriting the first half of a song isn’t nearly as simple as rewriting its second half. It’s like building the bottom half of a skyscraper with the top half dangling in the air. Nevertheless, I figured something out and turned it into a MOR goth ballad called “Ragged Love”. I was never a huge fan, it felt like a cop out (though others who heard it liked it ok). Despite the effort, it was ultimately cut. Eventually, in 2022 I cracked the code. I recorded traffic, street pavers and half transmitted radio stations, unearthed recordings of my long since passed grandmother and reworked ten year old lyrics into what became “The Diesel of Summer” (2020/2022). Saved.

lyrics

The diesel of summer is all I remember
From the window left open in our room

Our sorry excuses for keeping late hours
To the neighbors in studio two

And I'd do it all again, my delinquent friend
Because I haven't laughed that hard since
I don't imagine I will again

The street corner bar with it's ruddy red faces
Evaporates softly in the dark
We sent the stars racing around this dumb planet
Till we thought we were satisfied

And I'd do it all again, my delinquent friend
Because I haven't laughed that hard since
I don't imagine I will again

about

Jason Moody Chicago, Illinois

"Local musician Jason Moody has been riding the periphery of the Chicago indie scene for years, and I think he deserves a lot more attention than he gets. He's a songwriter who crafts well-structured pop songs, which makes them ripe for covering (check out Daniel Knox's cover of "Halcyon Days"). Moody has a way with melody and hooks. He's also got a lovely voice."
