about

Chez Rand was the name of a restaurant in the suburbs near where I grew up. That’s the name my friends and I gave it anyway, may’ve been named something else. Either way, I think it’s gone now. For lack of anything better to do, we’d drive to Chez Rand, park behind it, wander over an empty field where the train tracks crossed, into a small forested area butted up against a cemetery (like every other suburban white kid in existence before social media).

Eventually, you’d come to a clearing where you might find other friends drinking, smoking, lighting a bonfire, etc. Some evenings we'd encounter complete strangers. No one would really know what to do. I think mostly we’d just hang around wondering when one of them might get up and murder us. This place is the basis of “The Ballad of Chez Rand” (2020), my miniature diorama of those times. Gabriel Hammond and Stephen Cecil return to perform the cello and viola parts respectively.

lyrics

We could really put on miles tonight
Before we're lost to anyone

No one notices, we blow the light and
Time keeps rolling on

Pick another ancient song to play
This one really brings me back

Abandoned firesides and railroad lines
Stretching far into the past
Lying silently intact

Here's to 'Denna
Here's to Dan and Matt
Here's to Kim and here's to Scott
Here's to Dryden and to old Chez Rand

May we all go down at once

May we all go down at once

about

Jason Moody Chicago, Illinois

"Local musician Jason Moody has been riding the periphery of the Chicago indie scene for years, and I think he deserves a lot more attention than he gets. He's a songwriter who crafts well-structured pop songs, which makes them ripe for covering (check out Daniel Knox's cover of "Halcyon Days"). Moody has a way with melody and hooks. He's also got a lovely voice."
